| Types
of Solar Systems
There are two basic types of solar-electric systems: "stand-alone" systems and "grid-tie" systems. Stand-alone systems This is a solar-electric system, used when electric utility connection is too expensive or not available. It requires a bank of special batteries (called "deep cycle" batteries) that store power for future use. Some stand-alone systems may also include a wind generator in locations where there is consistent wind energy, and/or a hydro-generator if flowing water is available nearby . Grid-tie Systems With this type of installation, one remains connected to the utility grid. However, the energy produced by the solar-electric system will reduce the power needed from an electric utility provider. Electric utility bills will be dramatically reduced, or eliminated completely. This will, of course, depend on your energy requirements and the size (output wattage) of the solar system installed. |
One big advantage
of a grid-tie system is that a battery bank is not required, which
simplifies installation and reduces cost. (Though you may wish to have a battery
back-up anyway, especially if the utility grid is prone to outages
in your area.) A device
called a "kilowatt-hour meter" keeps track of excess energy your
solar-electric system produces and "sells" to the utility
provider. Essentially, unneeded energy is "stored" on the
electrical grid and then utilized when needed (thus eliminating the need
for batteries). The utility provider charges only for the net
energy used from the grid, if any. When a system is properly sized, the
net energy usage from the utility will be zero. So (except for a
small accounting fee), that means no electric bills!

"Thomas Cote' of Mountain Solar worked with us to get the best price on our 18-panel, 2.5-kW solar electric system. He patiently and completely answered our questions, and his work on our installation was prompt, careful, and neat. Throughout the process, Thomas provided all the information and forms that we needed to file for the state rebate, tax credit, and city and PG&E permit approvals. There was a fair amount of paperwork, but he explained it very well. We enjoyed Thomas' friendly, helpful personality very much. Our system was installed in November 2004, and even on sunny January days, our panels produced about 2/3 as much electricity as we used - exactly on target with what we expected. We are looking forward to summer!" -- Eric & Peggy E, Auburn, CA |
